Let’s talk about that first week back. You know the one—it’s full of excitement, a little chaos, and a whole lot of new names and faces. I’ve been there, trying to build classroom community while keeping the energy positive and structured.
Over the years, I’ve learned one simple truth: starting the day with fun, meaningful games can completely change the tone of your classroom. That’s why I’m so excited to share four of my go-to resources that help make the back-to-school season smoother, sillier, and more successful!
1. Morning Meeting and Icebreaker Activity Game Show
If you’re looking for visual and interactive fun, this picture guessing game is GOLD. It’s self-checking and super simple to run during circle time or between lessons. Kids love the mystery and anticipation of zoomed-in pictures as they race to guess what it is!
These games are perfect brain breaks—low-prep for you and high-engagement for them. Bonus: they help build critical thinking and vocabulary in a totally fun way. I even had students begging to “play the guessing game” during indoor recess!
3. Escape the Science Lab Escape Room
This one is a game-changer (literally). It’s a printable escape room that turns your classroom into a mini-adventure. Your students must solve puzzles, find clues, and work together to escape the science lab on their first day. It’s perfect for grades 2–5.
What I love most: it blends teamwork, reading, and problem-solving right into the fun. It’s not just about escaping—it’s about bonding, thinking critically, and getting excited about the year ahead. And yes, it’s totally manageable even on Day 1.
👩🔬 Pro tip: Pair students in mixed-ability teams for this and watch those leadership skills start to shine!
This resource helps set the tone for classroom expectations without sounding like a lecture. It’s a game-based way to get students thinking about what good participation looks like—from raising hands to being respectful listeners.
Using this on Day 2 really helped my students understand expectations through discussion and examples, not just rules posted on the wall. Plus, it gets everyone talking, reflecting, and sharing from the get-go.
Why These Games Work:
Back-to-school can feel overwhelming, but with the right tools, it becomes an opportunity to connect, inspire, and build community right from Day 1. These four resources helped me create a classroom that felt warm, structured, and joyful. Whether it’s a quick icebreaker, a visual guessing game, a thrilling escape room, or a fun way to teach expectations—each of these activities helps your students feel like they belong.
Let’s make this school year the best one yet—starting with a whole lot of fun. 💛
